Our Commission as Christians
Just what, specifically, are we supposed to do?

scott tweed asks: I need a verse that applies to how we as christians are requested by God to spread the gosple. Im advising my daughter that she needs to help spread the gosple. She is telling me that job belongs to the Holy Spirit. My answer was that we are used as tools by the holy Spirit. I need a reference.

Hello, Scott. It is nice to hear that your daugther and you are discussing spiritual things. That is a good sign. There are plenty of chuch-goers who truck into church every week, but leave their 'religion' at the door when they leave. Don't be one of those people. We already have enough!

When you boil it all down, there are really only two things the Lord asks us to do: (1) believe, and (2) share. There is plenty of depth in each one of these, but, at the top level, that's all there is to a Christian lifestyle.

There are a few operative verses that come to mind when first reading your question. The textbook answer is known as the Great Commission, spoken by Jesus to his disciples just before leaving earth to go to heaven:

And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, 'All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.'
- Matthew 28:18 [NASB]

But really, you know, your daughter is very smart. Anything we do for God is meaningless without the Holy Spirit. God does not need us to spread the Gospel, live a clean life, spend our time, give our money, feed the poor, help the broken hearted, or do anything else that might qualify as a godly endeavor. In fact, without the Holy Spirit, all such activity is like dirty laundry to God:

For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
- Isaiah 64:6 [NASB]

Only with the power of God active in our lives do our deeds qualify as something more than a 'filthy garment' (verse above). So the first order of business is to be sure the Holy Spirit can work through us.

To work through us, the Holy Spirit must be in us. Not only that, He must have enough sway in our lives that He can trust us to properly represent God to other people. The Apostle Paul calls this 'being an ambassador' for Christ. This verse is one of my favorites:

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
- 2 Corinthians 5:20 [NASB]

Wikipedia defines 'ambassador' like this:

An ambassador is the highest ranking diplomat who represents a nation and is usually accredited to a foreign sovereign or government, or to an international organization.

Paul wants us to be high-ranking diplomats representing Jesus Christ to a world of people who are foreign to Him. Simply put, we cannot do that job by ourselves; we need God to do it through us.

If your daughter (or anyone else) is uncomfortable 'witnessing' to people, or talking about God with others, don't force it. It is something that can not be forced. My pastor likes to say 'God is a perfect gentleman, He will not force Himself on anyone. Instead, He draws and woos each person, politely asking them to follow Him.' We should be like God in this respect.

Far better than talking for God is living for God. If your daughter is living for God, she is doing plenty of silent talking on His behalf, and everyone around her is listening. She does not have to speak a word; she just needs to live like a godly young lady. This is how Peter puts it:

but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, 'YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.'
- 1 Peter 1:15ff [NASB]
